I can hardly believe it, but Olive turned 14 last

I can hardly believe it, but Olive turned 14 last week! She asked to have a few friends over last-minute for a small, casual party to celebrate. She planned the entire thing within a few days (with some support from me and her sister), from designing and sending her own @evite invitations to planning games, her favorite foods, and sparkling cotton candy drinks, too. She chose a simple and colorful invitation from thousands of beautiful #evite options to set the playful tone, filled in the important information, and was able to easily text and email invites out to friends immediately! We created a cascade of balloons in similar colors in our quaint living room where the party would be and added fresh flowers to the tables. To eat, we picked up a tray of her favorite nuggets and snacks, rimmed the glasses with marshmallow creme and sprinkles, and then stuffed them with cotton candy. She found a set of fun quizzes to download and print—which felt nostalgic to my own junior high years—and planned a few rounds of Twister and charades for group games. It was loud, giggly, and fun—so much like our Olive! Happy birthday, sweet girl!

At the start of December, the trees outside our windows vibrantly boasted their Autumn color—a tender metaphor of how our family life feels at the moment, straddling two seasons at once. One stage of mothering and homeschooling is vibrantly nearing the final years, and another stage of life quietly glows ahead, beckoning us forward in humility. One-by-one, we each step into new unknowns as another child graduates this Spring, and somewhere in the midst, I have felt the deeper need to tuck this app away and treasure it all in my heart instead. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas season. Here are a few tidbits from our own.

Blythe turned sixteen last week, so we cashed in expiring flight credits and surprised her with a girls trip to NYC—a first for her and Olive both. My mom joined us, too, which felt extra special, an opportunity for her to share some of her childhood stories living in NYC and NJ with us. We walked to the church where my grandparents were married and the street my great-grandparents lived. We walked everywhere rain or shine and ate so much along the way. We tried to read all of the Latin we stumbled across and identify all of the languages we heard. We notice the details in the architecture and danced in the falling leaves. We even fortuitously bumped into dear friends of ours, too! In short, it was a gift to all of us. Happy birthday, my sweet girl!
