52/52 :: end of year self-portraits

PHOTOGRAPHY, THE 52 PROJECT

week52-1week52-2week52-3week52-4

“a portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2014”

When we set up a photo booth on New Year’s Eve (more on that later), I thought it a fitting finale that each of the kids take their own final portrait of the year, unrehearsed or coached. I love how each of their personalities shine through, and can you believe it’s been 52 weeks already? I hardly can. Although this project was difficult at times, I so value how it forced me to stop regularly to really see each of my children in a new way and independent of the others–a valuable gift considering we’re all together so often. I plan to create a book from the project soon and continue the project into 2015. I hope you’ll continue to follow along! Thank you, Jodi, for inspiring so many of us with this beautiful project.

  1. i think this one is one of my favorites … for sure! you have a beautiful, lively bunch and it’s been fun to see them grow through your eyes.

    doing this project, i kept feeling like all my pictures looked the same (which, i’ll admit, some do!). BUT its a great memory that i am also putting in a book. those moments cannot be recreated no matter how beautiful, un-beautiful i think the compositions were. so i will cherish the exact images i did get and keep learning.

    excited to see all that is in store for you in this 2015 year and hope you know you are an encouragement and a true inspiration.

      What a gift, Sarah Nadine. Thank you! I completely agree that this project is beyond simply having a pretty picture (although I love that, too)–they are a time capsule of sorts, a week of their and our life come and gone. Each week, my husband or I read what I wrote aloud to them. They love it and love returning to them time and again. Thank you again for your encouragement. Wishing you the best in the new year! xo

  2. while your portraits are always so beautiful, i have enjoyed following this weekly series even more for the little anecdotes that go with each. it takes both a perspective eye and a mother’s heart to gain that kind of insight into your children. and how awesome that you have this collection for entire book of 2014! i think i may give it a try this year, as well.
    p.s love the photobooth idea for new year’s

      Thank you, Lucinda, for saying so and following along. I find my children never tire of hearing stories about themselves, funny things they said when they were younger. I’m glad to have a spot to keep better track of the day-to-day changes in them–details often lost for me in the bigger picture.

  3. Love this!! You inspired me to start it this year on my blog.

      How exciting, Ana. It can be grueling at times to remember to pick up the camera, but you’ll be so grateful. Best to you guys this year.
